The Need for Prevention

In Louisiana in FY2002, there were 7,647 valid cases of abuse and/or neglect involving 12,958 children and 27 children tragically died as the result of abuse or neglect. While the causes of child abuse and neglect are complex, it is possible to identify some of the risk factors contributing to child maltreatment and develop prevention programs that target these risk factors. For example, a lack of effective parenting skills and understanding of child development may contribute to parental difficulties in providing appropriate care to children and could result in abusive behavior. In response to this risk factor, some prevention programs offer telephone help-lines to parents who have concerns about their child’s development or behavior (DePlanfilis and Salus, 1992).
